Botulinum toxin (prescription treatments or “the treatment”) primarily works by temporarily paralysing the muscles responsible for causing wrinkles and fine lines. While the treatment itself does not directly stimulate collagen production, there is evidence to suggest that its use may indirectly contribute to collagen synthesis and skin rejuvenation.
Studies have explored potential secondary benefits of the treatment on skin quality and found that hydration, elasticity and improvements in texture of the skin can be seen post treatment.
A study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology in 2015 investigated the effects of the treatment on skin hydration in individuals with oily skin. The study found that the treatment, when used in the forehead, reduced sebum production, leading to improvements in skin hydration and a reduction in acne lesions.
While this study focused on individuals with oily skin, the findings suggest that the treatment may indirectly improve skin hydration by regulating sebum production.
Similarly, a study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2015 examined the effects of the treatment on skin elasticity in the forehead. The study found that the treatment led to improvements in skin elasticity, as measured by objective clinical assessments and patient-reported outcomes.
These findings suggest that the treatment may have positive effects on skin elasticity, although further research is needed to confirm these results and explore potential mechanisms.
While there is limited research specifically examining the effects of the treatment on skin texture, some studies have reported improvements in overall skin quality following treatment. These improvements may be attributed to factors such as reduced muscle tension, smoother skin surface due to wrinkle reduction, and enhanced collagen production stimulated by the healing process.
It’s important to note that individual responses to the treatment may vary, and factors such as age, skin type, and treatment regimen may influence outcomes.
